Seawolves improve to 18-4 on the season and 7-3 on home ice

HAPPAUGE, NY- This past weekend your #5 Seawolves split a hard fought series with the #11 Liberty University Flames.  The first game of the weekend the Seawolves came out hot as Sophomore forward Justin Lazalde (La Mirada, CA) opened the scoring 30 seconds into the game with the lone assist going to Freshman defenseman Frank Sherding (Eastchester, NY).  This fast start would not be an indicator for things to come as the Seawolves would eventually drop the hard hitting contest 7-3.

Liberty was led by Freshman forward Luke Hannon (Buffalo, NY) who had 2 goals and 2 assists and Senior forward Riley Egan (Carp, Ontario) who had 2 goals and 1 assist, respectively.  Luke Hannon currently leads the country in scoring with 60 points in 26 games played.

Other contributors for the Seawolves were Senior forward Sam Brewster (Plano, TX) who tied the score at 3 apiece, for his 9th tally of the year, at 5:09 of the second period.  This would be the closest the Seawolves would come to taking the lead, as the Liberty Flames would score four unanswered goals to end the game.

Junior Defenseman Kevin Kavanagh made his season debut for the Seawolves after missing the first twenty games of the season following hand surgery.  Kavanagh stated, “I just tried to keep it simple out there.  I need to get a few more games and practices under my belt to get back up to speed.  I’ll be fine.”  Kavanagh had 25 points in 30 games last season from the back end.

After the game Coach Chris Garofalo was not pleased with the result, “The collective team effort was not where it needed to be tonight, and that’s the main reason we lost, effort.” He also stated, “We need to be much better tomorrow, and we will be.”

Sunday’s match saw a much more determined Seawolves team take the ice.  This was a back and forth affair that had both teams matching e ach other blow for blow.

The first period ended in a scoreless tie.

The first goal of the game was scored by Senior forward Nick Barbera (Kings Park, NY) on a breakaway at 2:05 of the second period on a long stretch pass from Senior defenseman Chris Joseph (Levittown, NY).  Liberty would tie the game at 13:06 on a Steven Bellew goal with the lone assist going to Tyson Street.  A little over a minute later the Seawolves would take the lead on a nice deflection by Senior forward Vinny Lopes (Staten Island, NY).  Assists on the Lopes goal would go to Kevin Barry and Joe Bochichio. 2-1 at the end of the 2nd period.

In the third period, Liberty would tie the game at two a piece at the 5:11 mark on a short side snipe by Robert Ward with assists going to Cam Bakker and Chase Harris. The rest of the period was a battle and had many key saves made by Junior goalie Derek Willms (Coppell, TX), who played a very strong game in net for the Seawolves.

With just .2 seconds left on the clock Junior forward Tyler Underhill (East Aurora, NY) would deflect a shot from Chris Joseph to give the Seawolves a 3-2 lead and the eventual game winner.  Ryan Cotcamp also contributed the second assist on the play.
