Visiting Local Schools for Kids Day

In association with Brookhaven Town Supervisor Mark Lesko, the collegiate athletes of Stony Brook University Hockey will be visiting select Middle Schools this week. Offering free admission to this Sunday’s big game vs. 4th ranked Liberty University, the players will be speaking to students at school assemblies about their experiences as student athletes, showing some basic stick handling skills, and urging kids to play sports and stay away from drugs and alcohol. Defenseman Pete Zarrella and forward Dan Cassano (pictured below) recently visited Longwood Middle School. “The kids were great”, said Assistant Captain Pete Zarella. “I remember when I was their age, sports was very important to me, and I believe being active as a kid really helped me develop to who I am today.” Middle Schools participating in the program are Longwood, Sequoia, Mt. Sinai and South Ocean. Kids Day is this Sunday at 12 noon at The Rinx in Hauppauge.

The game was a very fast, puck moving game. In the end, the Seawolves were able to defeat the Bobcats 5-2. “We are grateful to the Bobcats for coming out to play us,” says Captain Colin Brumstead. “We hope that this exhibition was a positive experience for the local talent to learn that Stony Brook hockey is the real deal.” The Seawolves are now looking into doing a charity game with the Bobcats in September 2010. Thank you New York Bobcats and best of luck this season!

AMAZING IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT
by Sam Kilb

Thousands of fans lined the glass at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center on Saturday night as the Stony Brook Seawolves ice hockey team blew away Penn State Berks in the College Hockey Challenge, 5-1. Official attendance figures showed that more than 1,500 fans had packed into the new ice rink to cheer the Seawolves to victory.  Town Supervisor John Venditto, who was instrumental in bringing the Seawolves to Oyster Bay, expressed his support for Stony Brook’s “great hockey program” during an interview with Seawolves Hockey Live, which broadcast the game online at stonybrookhockey.com to another 1000 fans around the country.

They didn’t have to wait long for something to celebrate as the Seawolves took a 1-0 lead just four minutes into the game when sophomore winger Make Cacciotti stuffed home a rebound to a thunderous roar from the fans.  The Seawolves weren’t done in the first, adding a rare goal from Captain defenseman Colin Brumstead with 8:24 to go in the period.  Assistant captain Mo Torres slid a pass into the path of the charging senior Brumstead who slammed the puck past the helpless goalie.  Stony Brook added another with 3:42 to go in the first when junior forward Bryan Elfant scored off assists from Torres and Dan Cassano.

The second period was more of the same from Stony Brook.  Penn State Berks was outmatched on both ends of the ice, struggling to maintain any pressure.  Stony Brook goals in the second were from Wong at the 7:41 mark and Ryan at the 10:16 mark.  Both goals were assisted by Cassano, while Elfant also earned a helper.  The Seawolves took a 5-0 lead into the third period.  Penn State finally solved Stony Brook netminder Chris Hausel with 1:46 to go in the game, as the visitors took advantage of a 5-on-3 two-man advantage.

The game featured two new additions to the Seawolves team.  Forward Dan Cassano, who transferred to Stony Brook from Neumann University in Pennsylvania, showed to be a strong skater, quick with the puck on his stick and with the vision to set up goals.  Cassano was named MVP of the game with his three assists. Also new to the squad was forward Peter Kaliscik.  Kaliscik brings more size to the Stony Brook lineup, but also has great speed, which he showcased on the penalty kill as he skated circles around Penn State Berks and almost single-handedly killed off several penalties.  A smart player with good hands, Kaliscik will make an impact down the stretch as Stony Brook pursues a national championship.

In addition to speed and talent on the ice, the Town of Oyster Bay College Hockey Challenge attracted more fans than expected. Armed with cowbells from sponsor AMICA Insurance, fans at the game expereinced an arena atmosphere. When the seats filled, many fans lined the boards giving them the best standing room seats closest to the action. The Ice Girls and Mascot were busy the entire game, bringing the best college sports event on Long Island to Bethpage. Fans were entertained with clinics from the Stony Brook players and Town youth hockey coaches before the game (photo above). Rough Riders Sled Hockey played prior to the official puck drop while a youth figure skating exhibition and a on-ice sled race entertained during intermissions.

Stony Brook next takes home ice at The Rinx in Hauppauge on January 23rd when they take on perennial powerhouse and 4th ranked Liberty University Flames at 8 p.m.   The game will be “Union Night”, one of the biggest nights of the year for Long Island’s best college hockey program.

The following story has been reported in the Syosset-Jericho Tribune & the Oyster Bay Enterprise community newspapers.

College Hockey Teams To Square Off At Bethpage Rink

Penn State Berks University to Play Stony Brook University on Saturday, January 9th at 8:00 p.m.

The Town of Oyster Bay will host the Supervisor’s College Hockey Challenge, a College Hockey Showdown, at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center on Stewart Avenue, Bethpage on Saturday, January 9, 2010, at 8:00 p.m., according to Town Supervisor John Venditto. The contest, featuring nationally ranked Penn State Berks University and Stony Brook University, will showcase some the area’s best hockey talent. Admission is free, but those in attendance are asked to bring two cans of food to support “Hockey Fights Hunger.”

Penn State Berks University and Stony Brook University is ranked in the American Collegiate Hockey Association’s Division 1 standings. Both the Nittany Lions and the Seawolves have impressive track records of success. Prior to the game, players from Stony Brook University will conduct a hockey clinic with participants from the Town’s Ice Hockey Program. There will also be an exhibition featuring handicapped players from the Long Island Sled Hockey Association, as well as a figure skating exhibition between periods of the collegiate contest.

“Ice Hockey has always been extremely popular in the Town, evidenced by the many youngsters who enthusiastically participate in the Town’s Ice Hockey Program,” said Supervisor Venditto. “This game coming to the Town’s state-of-the-art indoor rink in Bethpage represents the widespread appeal of the sport. It should be very popular with local residents, who enjoy seeing ice hockey played at a very high level.”

Supervisor Venditto commended the staff of the Town’s Parks Department for their ongoing efforts to maintain the Town’s outstanding facilities like the Ice Skating Center at Bethpage. “It’s no secret in the local sports community that the Town’s facilities are among the finest in the nation,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The fact that Penn State Berks and Stony Brook are playing at our rink is testament to that fact. I feel it is truly a compliment when ACHA Division 1 athletic programs play at our facilities. They feature some of the finest athletes in the country.”

Supervisor Venditto said he is looking forward to the Supervisor’s Challenge Cup on January 9th. “It will be an outstanding event and I’m proud to be hosting it here in the Town of Oyster Bay,” the Supervisor said. “I hope residents will come out and support these two outstanding schools.”

Stony Brook 10, LeHigh 2
by Sam Kilb

Honoring the passing of former assistant coach and Seawolves Hockey Live color commentator Bill Misa, 19th ranked Stony Brook hockey opened their weekend homestand in great style, defeating the Lehigh University Mountain Hawks by a score of 10-2.  It took Stony Brook just 2:15 to get on the board, as freshman forward Sean Collins finished a pass from junior forward Chris Ryan to give the Seawolves a 1-0 lead.  Just 30 seconds later, Collins struck again with assists going to Ryan and senior forward Greg Maggio, bringing the approximately 500 fans to a deafening roar.

With the student-organized pep band again making the trip from campus to The Rinx in Hauppauge, Stony Brook put on a show, getting goals from John Jennings and Mike Caccioti to take a 4-0 lead into the first intermission. Not even a minute of the second period had passed when Mo Torres struck off assists from defenseman Pete Zarella and forward Tom Pacifico.  After two more goals, one each from Jennings and defenseman Jason Aro, the Lehigh coach had seen enough and changed goalies.  The Seawolves made it look easy, skating past the Lehigh defense like they were standing still.  Stony Brook took a 9-0 lead into the third period, with Caccioti and Pacifico each scoring before the end of the second.

The third period got physical, as Lehigh began taking cheap shots at the faster Stony Brook team.  The Seawolves scored once more in the third, with Caccioti completing his hat trick.

Cacciotti's two goals lead Stony Brook in hockey
NEWSDAY, October 10, 2009
Mike Cacciotti scored two first-period goals for 14th-ranked Stony Brook in a 4-1 win over Arizona at the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) Showcase in Youngstown, Ohio, Saturday. Cacciotti's first score came off a feed from Chris Ryan. His second came with 33 seconds left in the first to give the Seawolves (2-1) a 3-0 lead. Defensemen Pete Zarrella and Kyle Houser also scored and goalie Chris Hausel had 19 saves for Stony Brook, which outshot Arizona, 35-20.

Seawolves Dominate in Season Home Opener
In front of 800 screaming fans at The Rinx in Hauppauge, the 14th ranked Stony Brook University Seawolves Ice Hockey Team spanked the Villanova University Wildcats 6-2. Stony Brook opened the scoring early, when Assistant Captain Mauricio Torres scored off an assist from Mike Cacciotti just three minutes and 20 seconds into the first period.  The Seawolves never looked back, adding goals from Tom Pacifico and Pete Zarella in a contentious second period to take a 3-0 lead into the third. Chris Ryan scored for the Seawolves early in the final period off assists from Zarella and Bryan Elfant, adding to the decisive lead.  Minutes later the Wildcats made a feeble attempt for a comeback, scoring a pair of goals within two minutes of each other.  But the dominant Seawolves would not be stopped, scoring two of their own before the final horn.  Caccioti added a goal to his two assists, and Sean Collins scored on the power play to seal the victory. Zarella led the team with a goal and three assists on the game. Hard-hitting defensive play from Captain Colin Brumstead and Phill Borner kept the crowd on their feet and shut the Wildcats down, preserving the Seawolves' lead.  Goalie Chris Hausel had 22 saves over the last two periods. Stony Brook returns home on October 17 when they take on the Towson University Tigers at 8 PM at the Rinx in Hauppague.

Seawolves Busy Off-Season
The players, Ice Girls, coaches and staff have been busy this off season. In addition to staying in shape and constant training, a fundraiser was thrown for us by local alumni and leaders from the local Business, Medical & Legal community as part of our BML Team. We have been making arrangements to do charity work again for the Stony Brook Hospital, a Skate for Autism, Hockey Fights Cancer and Kids Days with the schools. At the end of the season we will be working with NFL Legend, Long Islander and recreational hockey player Boomer Esiason to raise awareness for cystic fibrosis. We are also working with our active servicemen and women in the armed forces.  "Being in this program is more than just sticks and skates" says Captain Colin Brumstead. "We have been reaching out all summer, finding ways to help off the ice too.

Home Opener
There's a chill in the air, and that means one important thing-it's hockey time again.  The best hockey program on Long Island has been revving up preseason preparations in anticipation of the home opener on October 3rd, when Stony Brook takes on the Villanova Wildcats at The Rinx. The boys have been working hard on and off the ice, skating and getting back into game shape both physically and mentally. Be sure to be a part of the season as the Seawolves look to once again step into the spotlight in pursuit of a national championship. - Sam Kilb

Stony Brook  Loses 4-3 to
Delaware in ACHA Championship Tournament

After 10 hours on the iron lung, the Stony Brook University Seawolves Ice Hockey team lost a heartbreaking neck to neck game against the University of Delaware Blue Hens 4-3 in Cleveland, Ohio at the American Collegiate Hockey Association National Tournament. Stony Brook had six penalties to Delaware’s five.  All of the Seawolves goals were power play goals. Delaware greatly outshot Stony Brook 45 to 22. Stony Brook plays a conciliation game on Sunday. Winning the conciliation game is important to the hockey program because it determines national ranking for next season.  It is also important to note that Stony Brook is one of the few public colleges in the ACHA tournament that does not have a rink on campus. Our Seawolves played a great game with a lot of heart, and they represented our school, our program and Long Island well.

Pacifico wins Fronzoni Scholarship Award
Last Home Game Weekend a Big One for Stony Brook Hockey
The last home game weekend for the Seawolves was a successful and emotional one. Fans said faerwell to graduating Seniors Angelo Serse & Dan Capizzuto. We also tallied the season fan attendence numbers to 4,500, and forward Tom Pacifico was awarded the Fronzoni Scholarship from the family of our brother Anthony Fronzoni. Anthony played for Stony Brook as a Assistant Captain, All-Star and All American. In 2006, we lost Anthony in a tragic car accident. "I am grateful and proud to win the scholarship", says Tom Pacifico. "I know Fronzoni was a great hockey player and this means alot to me." The Stony Brook Hockey Program would like to thank the Fronzoni family for their continious support of the best college hockey program on Long Island. Capizzuto Makes All Star TeamDan Capizzuto makes ACHA All-Star Team
Congratulations to Assistant Captain Dan Capizzuto for making the American Collegiate Hockey Association All-Star Team. Only a few select players from across the country throughout Division 1 College Hockey Programs were selected. Capizzuto, who will be graduating this spring, was the only Stony Brook player to have made this national team. "I was moved from forward to defense this season, and I enjoyed the perspective it gave my game" says Capizzuto. "I am happy I made the team and I hope to represent our program and our school well." Number 97 will be skating in the All-Star game in April in Cleveland, Ohio. Good Luck Dan, we are proud of you. Go Seawolves!

Stony Brook Invited to ACHA National Tournament
For the 11th season in a row, the Stony Brook University Men's Ice Hockey Team has been invited to the National Championship Tournament in Gates Mills, Ohio on March 14th for the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA).

The top 16 teams in the country are invited to the tournament. Rankings are based on coaches votes, and this season had its ups and downs for Stony Brook. Off to a rough start, Stony Brook began their season 0-5.  One of the main reasons was that they played some of the toughest teams in the league early.  But throughout the season, as Stony Brook was ranked, 19, then 17, then 18, they beat teams that were ranked in the top 10. On the road victories vs. Delaware, Iowa State, Rhode Island, West Chester PA & Liberty University were key indicators to the ACHA that Stony Brook is still a National Contender. .

Stony Brook has the confidence to know that they can win at Nationals. Teams that the Seawolves are scheduled to play have lost to Stony Brook during the regular season. But before they take a 9 hour bus trip to Ohio, Stony Brook must travel to West Chester PA for their Division Playoffs. The Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association (ECHA) playoffs take place on March 6th - March 8th.

Seawolves name Captains and play the media game for charity
Last Week the Seawolves visited Stony Brook Hospital to brighten the day of the kids. While there, the Director informed the team that the Pediatric Unit is in need of DVD's for the kids. So the team is working its hardest to get the word out and is asking all fans to bring new and unwrapped toys to the Nov. 23rd home game, and is asking for fans to pick up some new DVD's. So recently named Captain Angelo Serse (8) went onto News 12 and did a 2 minute live interview with Sports Director Mike Coleman to let everyone know to do what they can for the kids. On Thursday November 13th, Assistant Captain Dan Capizzuto (97) is going onto Party 105 Radio Live to talk about the toy drive. Defenseman Colin Brunstead (6) was also named Captain and Junior forward Ryan Hodkinson (27) was also named Assistant Captain. "We accept these letters with great pride and responsibility" says Captain Colin Brumstead. "We need to work together not only on the ice, but off, especially when it comes to helping the charities that serve our community".

Seawolves Upset 4th Ranked Liberty & Rise in National Ranks
After 8 hours on the road, the Hockey Team stepped off the bus onto the ice in Lynchburg, VA for a little payback.  Down 2 goals within the first 10 minutes of the 1st Period, the Seawolves answered quickly with 3 unanswered goals. Holding the lead for 2 straight periods during fan taunts and roughing, hooking and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the Flames scored with 1:48 remaining.  Scoreless in overtime, Seawolves rookie 1st liner Chris Ryan (#17) scored the winning goal in a shootout to quiet the 3,000 fans to bring your Stony Brook University Seawolves Ice Hockey Team to #19 in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.  After 19 hours in the iron lung, the best college hockey team on Long Island brought home 2 Wins as promised by Senior goal scorer Angelo Serse (#8) beating the Villanova University Wildcats at home 7-2. Wins this weekend against LeHigh University will bring the team even closer to a trip to Nationals. Senior Mauricio Torres (#23) who scored 2 goals and an assist against Villanova said, “We’re just weeks away from playing 9th ranked West Chester at home. Liberty University always has a 6th player on during their home games…their fans. We’re looking for Seawolves fans to make some noise at our home games and be the 6th player we need to continue to win.”
