The Seawolves’ successful 2019-20 season has come to an unexpected end due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
Given new developments, the American Collegiate Hockey Association made the decision to cancel this year’s national tournament in Dallas, Texas. Stony Brook was slated to play Indiana Tech on Saturday, March 20 and was ranked No. 7 in the nation. The cancellation follows a trend throughout the world of sports, with the NHL, NBA, MLB, MLS, and NCAA all choosing to suspend or cancel their seasons.
The team finished the season with a 23-10-1 record, including last weekend’s Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League playoffs in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Stony Brook faced off with NYU for the third straight game in the ESCHL Semifinal on Saturday, March 7 and extended its active winning streak against the Violets to 10 games in a 7-2 victory. The win secured the Seawolves a trip to the league championship game on Sunday, March 8, where they faced the rival Liberty Flames. The No. 2 Flames proved too difficult to overcome for the Seawolves, however, who lost 4-0 in what turned out to be their final game until next season.
Though the season ended unexpectedly, it was a very successful year both on and off the ice for the team. Stony Brook’s No. 7 ranking was its best in the past five seasons and the team repeatedly proved that it is a force to be reckoned with throughout the ACHA. The Seawolves also ramped up their efforts for student and community engagement in 2019-20, introducing a variety of new student-centered theme nights and increasing the frequency of on-campus events.
We would like to thank all of our fans for their continued and overwhelming support. We can’t wait to return to the ice next Fall and continue working toward accomplishing our ultimate goal of bringing a National Championship home to Stony Brook.
