The Seawolves skid continued this past weekend against the University of Delaware Blue Hens, with Stony Brook dropping a pair of games on Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2 at The Rinx in Hauppauge.
Stony Brook held leads in both games but was unable to hold on and secure the victories. The Seawolves’ second-straight weekend sweep extends their losing streak to four games, the longest stretch without a win since the 2011-2012 season.
Saturday night’s game was a low-scoring affair throughout the opening two periods of play, with just one goal being scored in the first 40 minutes. Freshman forward Dustin Rinaldo broke the ice for the Seawolves with just over two minutes left in the middle frame, giving the home team a 1-0 advantage entering the third. The lead was squandered following the second intermission, however, when Delaware struck three times in 4:21 to go up 3-1.
Junior defenseman John Hickey scored his first goal as a Seawolf to draw within one, but Stony Brook was unable to find an equalizer and fell 3-2.
Sunday’s game followed a similar script for the struggling Seawolves. After scoring twice in the first period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission, the team was outscored 4-1 in the second and found themselves trailing once again.
Junior Goalie Sean Keating made a spectacular glove save in the late stages of the third period to keep the deficit at one goal, but Stony Brook was ultimately unable to tie the game. A final goal from Delaware sophomore forward Brian Ostrander put the game out of reach, securing the Blue Hens’ 5-3 win and weekend sweep.
Stony Brook will finish out the first half of its schedule on the road this weekend with a pair of games against Robert Morris Illinois on Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8. Both games begin at 7:20 p.m.
