The Seawolves improved their record to 10-6 last weekend, sweeping the NYU Violets in a home-and-home series.
Stony Brook never trailed in its 4-3 win at Chelsea Piers on Friday, November 15. A pair of first period goals from junior forward Aiden Boehm and sophomore forward Conor Dempsey gave the Seawolves a 2-0 lead going into the first intermission. NYU managed to get one back early in the second period, but freshman defenseman Matthew McDermitt’s first goal as a Seawolf made it 3-1 through 40 minutes of play.
NYU continued to battle, cutting the lead in half early in the third period before eventually scoring to tie the game 3-3 with 6:16 remaining in regulation time. Stony Brook showed its resilience however, and under a minute following the tying goal Boehm struck again to give his team the eventual game-winning goal. The 4-3 victory extended Stony Brook’s undefeated streak in New York City, which dates back to November 9, 2018.
The Seawolves struck first once again in the second game of the series on Saturday, November 16 at The Rinx. Sophomore forward Dustin Rinaldo gave his team an early 1-0 lead with his team-leading 11th goal of the season, but the Violets did not back down. NYU struck twice in the first period to establish a 2-1 lead of its own.
Stony Brook needed a strong response in the second frame, and the team’s veterans stepped up to provide one. Junior forward Keith O’Brien scored to tie the game midway through the period and about five minutes later senior forward Nick Belger lit the lamp twice in 26 seconds to give the Seawolves a 4-2 advantage at the second intermission.
The score remained unchanged until late in the third period, when Boehm stuck for his third of the weekend, followed 30 seconds later by senior forward Kevin Murphy’s first goal in eight games. NYU scored one more time in the final minute, but it was not enough to overcome Stony Brook’s lead.
The Seawolves’ 6-3 win put their losing streak further in the rearview mirror with the team’s third straight win. The series sweep also brought Stony Brook back into the ACHA national rankings, where the team currently sits at No. 21. The Seawolves will finish up the first half of their season in Las Vegas next weekend when they take on the UNLV Rebels on Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7.
