Stony Brook bounced back this weekend with a pair of wins against ESCHL rival New York University. The Seawolves opened the two-game slate with a convincing 10-1 win at Sky Rink at Chelsea Piers on Friday night before heading home to The Rinx for a 3-2 win. Stony Brook broke the ice just over two minutes into game one of the series when junior forward Nick Belger tapped in senior forward Brad Riccardi’s wrap-around attempt, but NYU found an answer midway through the first to tie the game at 1-1. From there it was all Stony Brook, however, with eight different Seawolves finding the back of the net before the final
buzzer sounded. Freshman forward Filip Pomianek, freshman forward Kieran Kennedy and freshman defenseman Justin Geigel all tallied their first goals as Seawolves to top off the offensive onslaught. Saturday night’s game was more tightly contested with only five total goals scored in comparison to Friday’s 11. Stony Brook quickly moved out in front with a pair of goals from
junior forward Kevin Murphy and junior forward Devon Palmieri, but NYU did not allow the Seawolves to run up the score as they did the night before.
The Violets cut the Seawolves’ lead in half with five minutes to go in the first and went to the locker room down 2-1. Just 19 seconds into the middle frame Seawolves freshman forward Nate Chuckran deposited his third goal of the year to regain a two-goal lead for the home team. NYU pressured Stony Brook for the better part of the final two periods but was ultimately unable to completely erase the deficit. The Seawolves’ 3-2 win gave them a perfect 4-0-0 record against the Violets in 2018-19 and moves them to 13-8-3 overall on the season. They will head to Delaware this weekend for a pair of games against the Blue Hens at Fred Rust Arena.
