Goals came at a premium for the Seawolves this weekend against the Liberty Flames, with the Seawolves scoring just twice in consecutive losses to their ESCHL rival in Lynchburgh, Va.
Liberty defeated Stony Brook 3-1 on Friday, Nov. 2 at LaHaye Ice Center before skating to a dominating 8-1 victory the following night.
Stony Brook was able to keep pace with Liberty in Friday night’s game, though it never held a lead. After trailing 1-0 through 20 minutes, the Seawolves were able to briefly tie the score early in the second period. The Flames responded two minutes later with a goal of their own, regaining a 2-1 lead, and later tacked on another late in the second to extend their advantage to 3-1, which became the final score.
The Seawolves got into penalty trouble early in Saturday’s game and it cost them. The Flames struck on the power play twice in the opening period and again in the second to blow the game open 5-1. Sophomore forward Cole Gammer led the offensive onslaught for Liberty with four goals in the game.
Junior forward Nick Belger and freshman forward Dustin Rinaldo scored the Seawolves’ only goals this weekend. Junior goalie Richard Shipman was in net to start both games, though sophomore goalie Robby Lockwood replaced him in goal for the third period of game two. Special teams struggled in the series as well, with the power play units failing to convert on nine opportunities while the penalty kill surrendered three goals in eight short-handed situations.
The Seawolves will look to get back in the win column on Friday, Nov. 9 and Saturday, Nov. 10 in their home-and-home series with the NYU Violets. Puck drop for game one is scheduled for 9 p.m. at Chelsea Piers.
