The Seawolves continued their successful second half this weekend with a two-game sweep against the Delaware Blue Hens.
Stony Brook wasted little time in the first game of the series on Friday, Feb. 8. Senior forward Brad Riccardi opened the scoring just 35 seconds into the game with his first of two goals on the night. Delaware responded with a tally of its own at the 7:34 mark of the period, but senior forward Matthew Crockett found the back of the net 28 seconds later to regain a lead which Stony Brook wouldn’t surrender.
The Blue Hens chipped away at a 4-1 Seawolves lead and drew within one in the early stages of the third period, but a pair of goals from sophomore forward Keith O’Brien and one from sophomore forward Joseph Slevin secured the 7-3 win.
Saturday’s contest followed a similar structure. The Seawolves built a 5-0 by the midway point of the second period, but the Blue Hens did not throw in the towel. After 40 minutes of play, Delaware had cut Stony Brook’s lead to 5-4.
Senior defenseman Frank Coscia provided the Seawolves with the insurance goal they needed 10 seconds into the third period, giving his team a 6-4 lead and completing his first career hat trick. Delaware later scored to make it a one-goal game again, but Stony Brook held on and earned the 6-5 victory.
The team’s recent success has been due in part to offensive production from throughout the lineup. 12 players recorded points against Delaware including seven different goal-scorers.
The Seawolves are now 6-2-0 in the second half and currently own a four-game win streak. They will look to keep the streak alive when they return home to host the Syracuse Orange on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 17 at 3:30 p.m. All home games are played at The Rinx, 660 Terry Road Hauppauge.
