Two’s better than one

Week one of the 2016-2017 season is in the books and the Seawolves are 2-0! This past weekend Stony Brook hosted divisional opponent, the University of Rhode Island Rams. In front of sellout crowd the Seawolves scored six goals on the Rams as they moved past Rhode Island 6-1 on Friday night. The star of the game went to forward sophomore, Ori Benyamini. Benyamini helped set the tone early with a couple big hits and scoring the fourth goal of the game to put the game just out of reach for the Rams.
After the big win on Friday night the Seawolves were a little assumptive coming into Saturday night’s game as they were taken into overtime in the final minutes of the third period. Stony Brook led the Rams going into the third period 3-1 but gave up two goals late forcing overtime. The Seawolves were able to overcome the resilience of the Rams as captain JT Hall scored his third goal of the game from a beautiful back door feed from senior forward Chris Stemke at the 3:23 mark into overtime.
More importantly the Seawolves also celebrated this weekend’s news that former Captain, Sam Brewster who was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia last year had a successful bone marrow transplant from his sister a few weeks ago. We will not know if the marrow fully takes to Sam until the 100 day mark but this is an big step in the right direction.

In addition to Sam’s great news is honorary teammate Alex Shulder is now in remission from his battle with Leukemia. Last year Alex became a honorary teammate for the Seawolves and was presented with his own Seawolves team jersey this past weekend. The Seawolves were not only happy to celebrate Sam and Alex’s good news, they were also happy to raise money and awareness for the fight against Lukemia during Saturday’s game.
