Recap

Stony Brook got off to a good start to the regular season this weekend, sweeping the Drexel Dragons in a pair of home games.

The Seawolves were in control of Saturday night’s game against Drexel from start to finish. Late in the first period, freshman forward Luke Damiano put Stony Brook up 1-0 with his first goal as a Seawolf. Junior forward Joseph Slevin and senior defenseman Kyle Huhn tallied a pair of second period goals, giving the team a 3-0 lead.

The Dragons cut into the lead with a goal before the second period ended, but a strong third period effort ensured the win. The Seawolves scored a trio of goals off the sticks of junior defenseman Brendan Pepe and sophomore forward Dustin Rinaldo in the final 20 minutes, securing a 6-3 victory.

Sunday afternoon’s game at The Town of Oyster Bay Skating Center did not have the same strong start as game one, but eventually would become an instant classic.

Drexel held Stony Brook off the board for the entirety of the first and second periods and established a 3-0 lead heading into the third period. The Seawolves would have a daunting task ahead of them in order to make a comeback, but the home team was up for the challenge.

Seven minutes into the third, Pepe was able to put his team on the board with a power play and the Seawolves didn’t stop there. Senior forward Nick Belger made it a one-goal game four minutes later, scoring his first of the season since returning from injury. With just three minutes to go in regulation, senior forward Kevin Murphy tied the game at 3-3, forcing overtime.

The Seawolves had a chance to win the game in regulation with a late power play, but they were unable to convert in the first 26 seconds of the man advantage before the buzzer sounded to end regulation time. It did not take long in overtime to get the job done, however, as freshman defenseman Dominick Molfetto fired one into the net to complete the 4-3 comeback victory.

The weekend sweep gives Stony Brook a 2-0 record to begin the regular season and extends their streak of season-opening wins to seven years. They will face Delaware next weekend in the first ESCHL games of the year.
