Seawolves split weekend with University of Rhode Island

After a short break due to recent schedule changes, the Seawolves traveled to Rhode Island last weekend where they split their matchup against the Rams.

Senior forward Joseph Slevin started Stony Brook off strong in game one with a power play goal, giving the team a lead that they would never surrender. Junior forward Micheal Conlin and freshman forward Kyle Nestepny followed suit with two more goals, and then junior defenseman Matthew McDermitt found the back of the net to give Stony Brook a four-goal lead after the first period. Senior defenseman Brendan Pepe scored the only goal of the second period, but in the third period it was freshman forward Brandon Avezov who scored to make it a 6-0 game. Rhode Island ended sophomore goalie Brandon Sherman’s shutout bid later in the period with their only goal of the game, but McDermitt and the Seawolves got the last laugh after the defensemen scored again to secure a 7-1 win.

Despite the Seawolves’ best efforts in game two on Saturday, their 42 shots on goal were not enough to beat Rhode Island’s goalie. Stony Brook junior goalie Thomas Sullivan had his work cut out for him and rose to the challenge, turning aside 38 Rams shots, but the one that got past him in the second period turned out to be all Rhode Island needed. The Rams skated to a close 1-0 victory, shutting out Stony Brook for the first time this season.

The Seawolves will be back at The Rinx for their final regular season game against Drexel on February 12 at 8:30 p.m. Saturday’s game will be Alumni and Senior Night, all home games are played at The Rinx, 660 Terry Road, Hauppauge, NY 11788.
