Seawolves sweep NYU, win seventh-straight game

The Seawolves continued their winning ways this weekend, sweeping the New York University Violets in their home-and-home series. Stony Brook’s seven-game winning streak has improved the team’s overall record to 9-1 this season.

The Seawolves traveled to Chelsea Piers for their first game of the weekend on Friday, October 29 where they scored five goals on 36 shots to secure a 5-1 win. Junior defenseman Davin Van de Zilver gave the team its first goal of the weekend just over 13 minutes into the first period, followed by tallies from freshman forward Kyle Nestepny and junior defenseman Robert Distefano in the second period. Stony Brook surrendered one goal early in the third period but ended the game strong with goals from junior defenseman Matthew McDermitt and freshman forward Sean Kendrick.

On Saturday, October 30, the Seawolves were back home at The Rinx to host their first annual Spooky Brook Hockey Night. After nearly 45 minutes of scoreless hockey, Stony Brook won the game 1-0 thanks to senior defenseman Brendan Pepe’s fifth goal of the season. He now ranks third among defensemen in the ACHA with 14 points so far this season. Sophomore goalie Matvei Kazakov earned his first shutout as a Seawolf, turning away 28 shots on goal from NYU.

Next weekend, the Seawolves will travel to Lynchburg, VA for two games against the No. 3 Liberty University Flames on Friday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 6 at 7:00 p.m. at the LaHaye Ice Center.
